Uhuru Bracelets
In the East African language of Swahili, “Uhuru” is the name of the peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro — the Roof of Africa — and is a word that signifies freedom, liberty, and the ability to choose the direction of one’s own life.
Designed by the AfricAid Kids’ Team, the Uhuru Bracelet is a way of helping to give this very same freedom to a young girl in Tanzania, and is a fun and beautiful reminder of what “Uhuru” means to the young women that AfricAid supports.
Available in seven different band colors, the Uhuru Bracelet also represents the ability of Tanzanian girls, through an education, to have a voice regarding the preservation of some of the most beautiful aspects of life in East Africa. Each of the seven colors symbolizes a different aspect of African life:
Red — for the Maasai warrior
Pink — for the healthy birth of a child
Yellow — for the grasses of the Serengeti plains
Blue — for the waters of Lake Victoria
Black — for the black rhino
White — for the glaciers of Mt. Kilimanjaro
Green — for the ecosystem of the Ngorongoro Crater
At AfricAid, we believe that an education can help provide the key to giving girls the freedom to choose the future paths of their own lives and of their own nation. Your purchase of an Uhuru Bracelet will help make that education a reality and give the gift of “Uhuru” to a young African girl.
