Uhuru Circles
“Uhuru” — the Swahili word for freedom and liberty.
What better way to help ensure the benefits of freedom and liberty for girls in Africa than by helping to provide them with an education? Indeed, in Tanzania, a country where children and families so highly value educational opportunities, “Uhuru” and the Uhuru Torch signify the chance to go to school and to have the opportunity to set one’s own path or course in life.
To help to continue to make these educational opportunities available, and to help tangibly represent the “Uhuru” concept, AfricAid has developed the Uhuru Circles program. Designed to help enable AfricAid supporters share with others AfricAid’s educational mission and vision for positive change in Africa, these Circles provide fundraising opportunities for the work of AfricAid and the fulfillment of the educational dreams of children in Africa.
You can help AfricAid by starting an Uhuru Circle in your community. Uhuru Circles are easy to form. Simply use a social occasion to start the process. For instance, invite friends to your home for dinner, a wine & cheese tasting party, or simply for hors d’oeuvres, and discuss with them the educational and other challenges facing the students — and especially girls — of East Africa. AfricAid can provide you with informational material, including DVDs, and perhaps even a speaker, that can help you with your presentation. After the presentation, open up the discussion to ways that the group can help to meet these challenges, either through contributions that evening or by putting together a fundraising plan. Uhuru Circles can even become an ongoing process, in which the group regularly undertakes social fundraising activities such as annual auctions, crafts, holiday bazaars and fairs, art and cultural events.
Uhuru Circles are a fun and informative way to give you, your family, friends or coworkers the opportunity to combine your personal vision of philanthropy with social, educational and engagement occasions and opportunities that will directly benefit the cause of girls’ education in Africa.
